The Immune System Flashcards
What is the immune system and its function?
A large network of cells and tissue that protect body systems.
What are the main components of non specific immunity?
Barriers such as skin, saliva ,and mucus.
How long does non specific immunity last?
A few days or in some cases it can clear the pathogen completely.
What happens when non specific immunity is overwhelmed?
The secondary immune response is triggered.
What are the main components of adaptive (specific) immunity?
Antibodies such as white blood cells.
What occurs when secondary immunity is triggered?
Antibodies are released into the bloodstream which then target and destroy specific pathogens.
What is the function of the adenoid gland?
To produce antibodies.
Where is the Adenoid gland located?
In the roof of the mouth.
What is the function of tonsils?
To stop pathogens entering the body.
Where are the tonsils located?
At the back of the throat.
What is the function of the thymus?
To provide a place for T cells to develop and mature.
Where is the thymus located?
In the neck.
What are the functions of the spleen?
Processes and filters chemical information from the blood.
provides a place for immune cells to be enriched.
Where is the spleen located?
The abdomen.
What are the 5 innate immune functions?
Defence of body surfaces.
Destroy pathogens.
Produce natural antimicrobial substances.
Initiate the inflammatory response.
Immunological surveillance.
