- Protects the body from chemicals.
- Protects from disease, UV light, and physical damage.
Describe the physiology of the integumentary system. (6 functions)
- Protect.
- Regulate temperature.
- Enables sensation.
- Synthesise vitamin D.
- Provide immunity.
- Excretion of waste ( E.g., through sweat, oil, wax)
What are the three layers of the skin and their components?
- Epidermis - granular tissue.
- Dermis - connective tissue.
- Subcutis - adipose tissue.
What is a sebaceous gland and its function/ location?
Found in the dermis.
Produces oily secretion called sebum.
What is the function of sebum?
To waterproof and provide elasticity to the skin.
What is a sudoriferous gland and its function/ location?
Found in the dermis.
Commonly known as sweat glands.
Found in hands, feet, and groin.
What is the ceruminous gland and its function/ location?
Only found in the dermis of the ear canals.
Produce cerumen.
What is the function of cerumen?
To protect the ear canals and lubricate the ear drum.
