The Renal System Flashcards
What controls blood flow to the kidneys?
Renal artery
What are the 4 homeostatic functions of the renal system?
- Regulate body acid-base (PH).
- Balance the concentration of electrolytes.
- Control of blood pressure.
- Excretion of hormones.
What is the function of the bladder?
To store urine before excretion.
What are the three layers of the bladder?
Smooth muscle, connective tissue, and inner lining.
What are the 3 main functions of the kidneys?
Filtration, reabsorption, and secretion.
What purpose do the kidneys have within the renal system?
Remove urea by filtering the blood through nephrons.
What is urea?
A waste product created by the breakdown of proteins.
Describe the process of the renal system.
- Nutrients are removed from food and drink.
- Converted into energy.
- Waste products are left in the blood.
- Blood is filtered and waste is excreted through urine and faeces.
What is the function of the ureter?
Carries urine from the kidney to the bladder.
How does the ureter function?
Muscles in the ureter walls contract and relax to extract urine from the kidneys.
What are the components of the renal system?
Kidneys, ureters, bladder, renal artery, and urethra.
What is the purpose of the renal system?
To eliminate waste from the body, regulate blood volume and pressure, control levels of electrolytes, and regulate blood PH.
What is the urethra?
A thin fibromuscular tube that begins in the lower opening of the bladder and extends through the pelvic and urogenital diaphragms.
What is the external opening through which waste is excreted called?
Urethral orifice.
