What was the Saratoga Campaign?
A three pronged plan to capture NY and separate the North-east from the Southern Colonies
Why did the Saratoga Campaign fail?
- General Howe went to Philadelphia instead of Albany
- General Burgoyne Captured Fort Ticonderoga, but ran out of supplies and was forced to surrender to Colonial Troops
- General St Ledger made progress across NY, but after a few small battles they lost steam.
Who was Burgoyne defeated by in the battle of Saratoga in 1777?
What did this do?

This confirmed the failure of the Saratoga Campaign. It also convinced the French that Americans could win the war.
What did the Treaty of Alliance Accomplish?
In 1778 With France, it supplied Americans with French troops, money, and ships.
What did French want out of the treaty?
They wanted to gain back the territory they had just lost in the French and Indian War. They also wanted to position themselves to colonize unclaimed parts of North America.
After the failure of the Saratoga Campaign, what did the British turn to?
They attempted to conquer the southern colonies. Planned by Sir Henry Clinton and implemented by General Cornwallis

It began on the coast of South Carolina
What weakened Cornwallis?
Bloody battles in North and South Carolina
When Cornwallis was forced to make a supply run to Yorktown, what happened?
They suffered a Naval Defeat at the hands of the French, and then were forced to retreat by GW led troops. They were then weakened by a violent storm.
This incurred Surrender.
When did Cornwallis Surrender?
October 17, 1781, ending the war.
