What happened between 1640 and 1660
The Colonies evolved from a system of servitude (Natives or Indentured Servants) to a system of forced labor (African Slaves).
How were African Slaves Taken?
They were sold to European Traders by African Chiefs in exchange for guns
What was chattel slavery?
Children of slaves were slaves as well. (Declared by VA in 1661 as first colony to legalize)
What happened when the Royal African Company lost its’ monopoly in the 1680s?
The Slave number increased greatly as the market was left open to anyone.
What precautions were put in place to keep down revolts?
Education was closed
No reading or writing
NO gathering together
No weapons
No leaving plantation without written permission
Serious Offenses were punished by execution in front of peers
