what is preterm?
A
-a birth that occurs before 37 completed weeks of gestation

A
-a birth between 37 weeks and 42 weeks of gestation

A
-a birth that occurs after 42 completed weeks of gestation

what can increase risk of baby dying?
A
10x higher risk for babies born before 32 eeks
3 x higher risk for twins
smoking during pregnancy
abnormally shaped uterus

what is the approach to pre term babies?
A
- delayed cord clamping
- keep baby warm
- gentle lung inflation
- intial O2 concentration
- use a saturation monitor

what are some common problems in preterm infants?
A
- temperature control
- feeding/nutrition
- sepsis
- system immaturity/dysfunction (Respiratory distress syndrome, patent doctus arteriorosus, intraventricular haemorrhage, necrotising enterocolitis)

what are some respiratory complications of prematurity ?
A
- RDS
- apnoea of prematurity
- bronchopulmonary dysplasia
