how does a preterm present?
- pre term baby is skinnier, ribs can show due to lack of fat deposition
- usually less muscle so arm just lays flat on bed
- preterm baby is pinker as skin is thinner
what helps neonate release O2 in labour?
foetal Hb
what is the objective measure of perinatal adaptation?
-apgar score
what are each element of Apgar score scored out of?
1-absent
2-there but not great
3-fine
what are the components of the Apgar score?
APGAR
Appearance
0= blue/ pale
1= blue extremities
2= no cyanosis
Pulse
0= <60
1= 60-100
2= >100
Grimace
0= no reaction
1= agressive stimulation for cry
3= cries on stimulation
Activity (tone)
0= absent/floppy
1= some flexion
2= flexes + resists extension
Respiratory effort
0= absent
1= weak/gasping
2= strong cry
what is a normal Apgar score?
=/>8
what would 0 on Apgar score suggest?
stillborn (can still resus from this)
what do we give normal healthy babies when born and why?
vitamin k to avoid haemorrhage disease of the newborn
how is vitamin K administered?
- usually IM
- can be given orally
