the posterior thigh & popliteal fossa Flashcards
hamstrings
- groups of 3 muscles
- most cross 2 joints (hip, knee)
- crucial for gait —> hip extension and knee flexion
biceps femoris- long head
O: ischial tuberosity
I: lateral condyle of tibia, head of fibula
A: knee flexion, medial rotation of tibia, hip extension
I: sciatic n–> tibial n.
biceps femoris- short head
O: linea aspera
I: lateral condyle of tibia, head of fibula
A: knee flexion, lateral rotation of tibia
In: sciatic n–> common fibular n
semitendinosus
O: ischial tuberosity
I: proximal medial tibia
A: knee flexion, medial rotation of tibia, hip extension
In: sciatic n–> tibial n
- LONG tendon
- superficial and medial
semimembranosus
O: ischial tuberosity
I: medial condyle of tibia
A: knee flexion, medial rotation of tibia, hip extension
In: sciatic n–> tibial n
- wide and flat muscles
- belly deep
goose foot
- combined tendons of 3 muscles interesting onto the proximal medial tibia
1. sartorius (anterior)
2. gracilis (medial)
3. semitendinosus (posterior)
popliteal fossa
the space located directly posterior to the knee joint
popliteal fossa: borders
superomedial: semimembranosus
superolateral: biceps femoris (long head)
inferomedial: gastrocnemius (medial head)
inferolateral: gastrocnemius (lateral head), plantaris, popliteus
floor: posterior surface of femur and tibia
popliteal fossa: contents
- popliteal vein
- popliteal artery
- tibial nerve
- common fibular nerve
- fascia lata
- deep popliteal lymph nodes
(sciatic nerve- doesn’t usually go through)
which muscle is NOT a border of the popliteal fossa
a) semimembranosus
b) semitendinosus
c) gastrocnemius
d) popliteus
e) biceps femoris (long head)
