The Positive Effects Of Volcanoes Flashcards
How does volcanoes effect tourism ?
Volcanic activitie is a major tourist attraction in many countries like Iceland, Italy and New Zealand
Volcanism creates landscapes that are very dramatic and attract thousands of visitors each year
E.G around 200,000 people climb mount Fuji each year to view Carter
Volcanic areas also provide hot springs and hot mud pools which attract people to bathe because of benefits to the skin e.g Iceland, Turkey
Geysers are fountains of extremely hot water that erupt from the ground in volcanic regions
Geysers attract thousands because they erupt so dramatically at regular intervals of 30 mins
Old faithful erupts every 30- 120 mins and attracts 2.6 million people, generating income for local economy
Economic benefits of volcano tourism include increased income for local economy and foreign currency exchange for national government
In Iceland the arrival of half a million visitors is worth 700 million euros
Many volcanic tourists attractions have tourist services such as coffee shops, souvenir shops and restaurants
Local people are employed as guides and drivers
How does volcanism effect geothermal energy?
Geothermal energy production uses heat from hot igneous rocks to heat water for steam that can be used to make electricity. Several countries use geothermal energy- Iceland, New Zealand
Iceland us located on the mid Atlantic ridge .
Hot magma rises to fill the rift between the plates, hot igneous rock heats the rain water that seeps to the ground to a temperature of 200 degrees
The hot water can be captured by drilling two km down into hot rocks above the magma
The water is carried by insulated pipes directly to homes and industries to supply hot and central heating
At present 26 % of electricity in Iceland is generated using geothermal energy
Heating from this sort of energy provides hot water and heating for 89% of Iceland housing
Geothermal energy reduces the need for fossil fuels and helps reduce greenhouse gas emitions
