Q

How does folding take place?

A

Rocks are pressed and squeezed during the collision of plates

They ‘re under great heat and pressure, this causes the rock to became flexable

The rock is know able to bend without breaking

It is uplifted during the collision of plates

This process is Knowles as orogeney

Around 350 million years ago old red sandstone formed and was later covered by limestone

The 300 million years ago the land folded in what is known as the American stage

The collision of both American and Eurasian plates created the north-east tree through Ireland

The limestone was more easily eroded leaving ridges of sandstone behind, an example of these ridges is macgillicuddy reeks

Oldest is the Caledonian orogeney that formed 400 million years ago

Youngest is alpine that formed 50 million years ago

Types of fold include Symetric, overfolds and monocyclic
