the periodic table Flashcards
what do the periods (rows) show?
number of shells an electron has
what do the groups (columns) show?
show how many outer electrons an atom has
the further away an electron is from the nucleus…..
the more energy it has
metals electrons arrangement?
1-3(more in periods 5 and 6) outer shell electrons
non metals electrons arrangement?
4-7
type of bonding that occurs with metal x metal?
metallic bonding
type of bonding that occurs in non-metals?
covalent bonding
metals electrical conductivity?
good conductors of electricity
non-metals electrical conductivity?
poor conductors of electricity
metals reaction with acids?
many react with acids
non-metals reaction with acids?
do not react with acids
physical characteristics of metals?
malleable, shiny, good conductors of electricity, high melting and boiling point
physical characteristics of non-metals?
brittle, dull, non-malleable, low melting and boiling points
why are metals malleable?
they have layers of ions that can slide over eachother easily
group 1 metals are also known as?
alkali metals
group 7 elements are known as?
halogens
group 8 elements are known as?
noble gases
why will elements in the same group have similar chemical properties?
they have the same number of outer shell electrons so will bond and react similarly
group 1 metals and group 7 elements react to form what?
ionic compounds
the group 1 metals become less or more reactive as you decrease down the group?
more reactive
the group 7 elements become less or more reactive as you decrease down the group?
less reactive
physical properties of non-metals?
monatomic (exist as single atoms), colourless, non-flammable gases
are noble gases stable?
yes- have a full outer shell- very unreactive
