carboxylic acids Flashcards
what are carboxylic acids?
organic molecules containing a -COOH functional group
what does the start of the name show?
how many carbon atoms it has
what does the end of the name show?
-oic acid- shows its a carboxylic acid
what is vinegar?
an aqueous solution of ethanoic acid
when does vinegar form?
when ethanol in wine undergoes microbial oxidation
why does vinegar have a sour taste?
because of the acidity of the ethanoic acid
what is an acid?
a H+ donor
how does carboxylic acid form a salt?
donates a H+
what happens when a carboxylic acid forms a salt? (charge)
the carboxylic acid group (COOH) loses its H+ and becomes negatively charged
what happens when a carboxylic acid forms a salt (name)?
changes from -oic acid in the carboxylic acid to -oate in the salt
acid + metal ->
salt + hydrogen
what are the observations of acid + metal?
effervescence: due to the hydrogen gas being produced
the solid disappears: due to the metal being used up in the reaction
acid + metal carbonate ->
salt + water + carbon dioxide
what are the observations for acid + metal carbonates?
effervescence due to the CO2 gas being produced
solid disappears due to the metal carbonate being used up in the reaction
