The pancreas (coordination and control) * Flashcards
Which two hormones does the pancreas produce?
insulin and glucagon
What is the function of insulin?
causes the liver to convert glucose to glycogen meaning the blood glucose levels will decrease
When is insulin released?
when the blood glucose levels in the body are too high
What is the function of glucagon?
causes the liver to convert glycogen into glucose meaning the blood glucose levels will increase
When is glucagon released?
when the blood glucose levels in the body are too low
Why can’t glucose be stored?
glucose is soluble - it effects osmosis so cells will be filled with water
Where is glycogen stored?
in the liver
What is diabetes?
type 1 - when the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin so it can’t regulate the blood sugar levels
type 2 - the body is unresponsive to insulin so it can’t regulate the blood sugar levels
Why does diabetes cause tiredness?
not enough sugar in the blood so less respiration
Why would diabetics lose weight?
protein (muscle) is broken down when there isn’t enough glucose
