took over 80,000 photos of farmland , the Federal Arts Project paid artists to paint pictures of their hometowns for display
what did the FSA do?
loaned over $1 billion to farmers to hep them during the depression and set up camps for migrant workers
why were the republicans against the FSA?
Some Republicans saw the jobs as boondoggles and a waste of money
What did the WPA do?
brought together all organizations aimed at creating jobs, 8 million jobs in 8 years
what schemes did the WPA provide?
employment schemes:
building, hospitals,schools,roads,airfields, bridges etc
non building: acting, photography and artists
what was the bad thing about the WPA?
unemployment levels still high (6mill) by 1941 when USA entered war. Very costly
what did the SSA do?
Gave financial help to the sick and disabled
Provided pensions for the elderly and widows
what schemes did the SSA provide?
Set up unemployment insurance schemes where workers made weekly contributions and they could receive relief if became unemployed
who did the SSA provide benefits to?
for victims of industrial accidents and aid for dependant mothers and children, the blind and physically disabled
what was bad about the SSA?
Helped many Americans feel more secure and protected BUT did not cover farm and domestic workers…
continued divide in the USA between urban and rural
