The Nervous System Flashcards
What is the Cns made up of?
The brain and spinal cord
What is the Pns made of??
All nerves synapsing outside the brain and spinal cord
The CNS def
Enables the brain to communicate with the rest of the body - conveys messages from both brain to PNS and PNS to brain
What is the PnS system split into?
The somatic and autonomic NS
Somatic??
Responsible for the voluntary movement of skeletal muscles (striated of striped muscles)
Autonomic?
Responsible for the communication of info between the CNs and the body’s skeletal muscles (smooth/ visceral muscles)
What’s ANS divided into?
The sympathetic and para- sympathetic NS
What does SNS do?
It is the fight or flight response “arousal response”
Responsible for the control over secretion of the stress hormone adrenalin
Pupils dilate, heart rate and breathing increases, secretion of adrenalin
What does PAra sympathetic NS do?
“It is the relaxation response”
Cause a return to allostasis (stable whilst changing)
Pupils constriction, decrease HR decrease breathing and secretion of adrenalin stops
What does the PNS consist of ?
Nerves
What do nerves contain??
Sensory neurons and motor neurons
What does the spinal cord contain?
Interneurons
Which link sensory neurons to motor neurons
What does the NS consist of and what do they do?
Neurons
Which communicate across synapses using signal molecules called neurotransmitters
What is a synapse?
A junction (point where two or me Ore things are joined) between two nerve cells, Consisting of a small gap across where impulses pass in a neurotransmitter
What are motor neurons?
They are nerves that communicate messages from CNS to particular muscles that an organism intends to move at any particular moment
What’s a sensory neuron?
Nerves that convey sensory info (sight, sound, feeling etc)
Are activated by sensory input and convey sensory information to other parts of NS and brain and spinal cord
What do glial cells do?
They increase the speed of neuron transmit ion, help stick neurons together, remove dead and damaged neurons
What’s a neuron?
A specialized cell that receives info and transmits it to other cells
The nervous system is split into which two dominant parts?
The central nervous system
And the the Peripheral nervous system
