Chap 5 Flashcards
The different brain structures??
Hind brain
Mid Brain
Forebrain
What makes up the hindbrain
Medulla- continuation of spine, controls breathing heartbeat digestion
Pons- sits above medulla, receives visual info to control eye and body actions
Medulla and pins make up brain stem
Cerebellum - recieves Info from pons, cerebellum a role is to coordinate the sequence of body movement
Mid brain parts
Reticular formation- Coordinates movement sleep and arousal
The forebrain parts
Hypothalamus- regulates emotions and instinctive drives
Thalamus- communications Centre, receives Info from ears eyes skin and other sensory organs, determines which sensory info is most important to pay attention to
Cerebrum- biggest and most recognizable part of forebrain, covered in thin layer called cerebral cortex
What is hemispheric specialization
Means that some functions of the brain are lateralised( only occur in one particular hemisphere) a clear example is language which is mainly the responsibility of the left hemisphere
