Chap 6 Flashcards
The difference between developmental and adaptive plasticity
Developmental plasticity only occurs in children and adolescents is the ability for synapses to be modified, whereas adaptive occurs in both children and adults, it allows for increased neurotransmitters
The 5 stages of developmental plasticity
Proliferation Migration Circuit formation Synaptic pruning Myelination
What is synaptogenesis
When axons of new neurons grow out to target cells - form synapses with them
What structures of the brain undergo development during adolescence?
Increase of number of neurons and synapses in cerebellum
Amygdala becomes more active
Corpus callosum thickens and there is increase of number or nerve fibers between the two hemispheres
Frontal lobe including prefrontal cortex, motor movement and higher order thinking
