The Nervous System Flashcards
What is a stimulus?
A change in the environment.
What are the five sense organs?
Skin Eyes Ears Nose Tongue
What are receptors?
Receptors are groups of cells which can detect a stimulus and turn into into electrical pulses.
Where are receptors found?
In the sensory organs.
What are the receptors in the eyes?
Light receptors in the retina.
What are the receptors in the ears?
Sound receptors and balance receptors that measure changes in the heads position.
What are the receptors in the nose?
Smell receptors which respond to the different chemicals.
What are the receptors in the tongue?
Taste receptors that are sensitive to chemicals.
What are the receptors in the skin?
Receptors close to the skin that are sensitive to touch, pressure and temperature
What is a sensory Neurone?
A neurone that carries a pulse from a sensory organ to the CNS.
What is a Relay Neurone?
A neurone that carries a pulse from the Sensory to the Motor neurone.
What is a Motor Neurone?
A neurone which carries signals from the CNS to Effectors.
What is an Effector?
A muscle or gland that creates a response from a nervous impulse.
What is the route of a pulse in response to a Stimulus?
Receptors in Sensory organ Sensory Neurone Central Nervous System Motor Neurone Effector
What is synapse?
The connection between two neurones.
