11
Q

Why does demyelination slow down conduction?

A

Impulse has further to travel as salutatory propagation is inhibited.

12
Q

What happens in multiple sclerosis?

A

Myelin sheath is destructively removed from the axon and is replaced by scar tissue.
Oligodendrocytes and axons can also be damaged.
Conduction velocity is slowed down.
Scar tissue doesn’t permit conduction so the axon is useless

15
Q

What is produced in Nissl bodies?

A

Neurotransmitter

16
Q

What are dendrites specialised to do?

A

Receive stimuli from the environment or other neurones

Conducts them towards the cell body

17
Q

What does the cell body consist of and what does it do?

A

Nucleus and cytoplasm containing Nissl substance.

Maintains the cell

18
Q

What is the axon specialised to do?

A

Generates or conducts nerve impulses AWAY from the cell body to other cells

19
Q

Where are neuroglial cells found and what do they do?

A

In the spaces between neurones in the central nervous system

Provide structural and metabolic support for neurones

20
Q

Name the four types of neuroglial cells

A

Oligodendrocytes
Astrocytes
Microglia
Ependymal cells

21
Q

What does grey matter contain?

A

Neuronal cell bodies and their associated fibres

22
Q

What does white matter contain?

A

Nerve fibres

23
Q

Why does white matter appear white?

A

Myelin

24
Q

What stain is used to allow myelin to show up?

A

Osmium tetroxide

25
Q

What is a ganglion?

A

An accumulation of neurone cell bodies, outside of the central nervous system.

26
Q

In the CNS, where are the cell bodies of sensory neurones found?

A

Spinal or cerebral ganglia at the dorsal root of spinal nerves
