Internal Surfaces Of The Body Flashcards
What does a mucous membrane consist of?
- epithelium
- adjacent layer of connective tissue - lamina propria
- in alimentary tract, a third layer of smooth muscle - muscularis mucosae
What does the mucous membrane line?
Internal tubes which open to the exterior eg
- alimentary tract
- respiratory tract
- urinary tract
What do serous membranes line?
Line closed body cavities and viscera eg
- peritoneum - envelopes many abdominal organs
- pleural sacs - envelopes the lungs
- pericardial sac - envelopes the heart
What do serous membranes consist of?
Epithelium which secretes lubricating fluid
Thin layer of connective tissue which attaches epithelium layer to adjacent tissues and carries blood vessels and nerves
What are the inner and outer parts of a serous membrane called?
Inner - visceral serosa
Outer - parietal serosa
Name the four layers of the gut wall
Mucosa
Submucosa
Muscularis externae
Serosa
What does the submucosa layer consist of?
Connective tissue, glands, arteries, veins and nerves
What is the muscularis externa made of?
Two layers of smooth muscle
In the gut, what does the muscularis externa do?
Creates successive peristaltic waves to move luminal contents along the gut
What does the lamina propria consist of?
Loose connective tissue with blood and lymph vessels, smooth muscle cells and cells of the immune system
Give the layers found in the wall of the oesophagus
Mucosa (epithelium, lamina propria, muscularis mucosae)
Submucosa
Muscularis externa
Adventitia
Give the layers of the ureter
Transitional epithelium
Fibroelastic lamina propria
Muscularis externa
Give the layers of the bladder wall
