Cartilage Flashcards
Name the three types of cartilage
Hyalin, elastic, fibrocartilage
What do chondrocytes in cartilage do?
Produce and maintain the extra cellular matrix
What is in the matrix of hyalin cartilage?
Hyaluronic acid, proteoglycans, type II collagen
What type of collagen is found in fibrocartilage
Type I cartilage
What cell types are found in hyalin cartilage?
Chondrocytes only
What is appositional growth?
Growth from the periphery
Where can elastic cartilage be found?
External ear (pinna), epiglottis, Eustachian tube
What type of cells are found in fibrocartilage?
Chondrocytes and fibroblasts
What does the large ratio of GAGs : type II collagen allow?
Diffusion of substances between the chondrocytes and blood vessels surrounding the cartilage
What does the large amount of hyaluronic acid allow for?
Resilience to the repeated application of pressure.
Where can hyaline cartilage be found?
Rib cage Nose Trachea Bronchi Larynx
What type of cartilage is the precursor model of bones which develop by endochondral ossification?
Hyaline
What type of connective tissue is perichondrium?
Dense
What do chondrocytes lie in?
Lacunae
Where is fibrocartilage found?
Intervertebral discs
Articular discs of sternoclavicular and temporomandibular joints
Menisci of the knee joint
Pubic symphysis
