The Nervous system Flashcards
CNS
Central Nervous system
What are nerves made up of
Neurons
What is the CNS
controls the body
What is the CNS made up of
Brain
Spinal cord
Peripheral nerves
sensory organs
what is a stimulus
a change in the surroundings
Sense organs
Receptor cells in sense organs detect a stimulus. The body can then bring about the correct sense to this
Sciatic nerve
the thickest nerve connecting the heel and spinal cord
what does the CNS do
sends messages throughout the body as electrical signals called impulses
What is a neurotransmission
a travelling impulse
What is the myelin sheath
insulates a neurone from neighbouring neurones
stop the signal loosing energy
Synapse
the connection between two neurones
How do neurotransmissions pass through synapses
signal is transferred by neurotransmitters which set of a new electrical signal into the next neurone
