Osmoregulation Flashcards
Osmoregulation
control of balance of water and mineral salts in the body.
What happens if there is too much or too little water in your body
damages cells because water in cells allows molecules in cell’s reactions to move around
water is needed to keep shape of the cell
Urinary system
removes excess amount of some substances from the blood
removes urea
Urea
produced in liver cells from breakdown of amino acids that are in greater amounts than needed
urea passes into blood and is taken to kidneys
Kidney failure
both kidneys stop working properly
Why is kidney failure dangerous
waste substances increase in concentration
Kidney Dialysis
machine to do the job of the kidney and remove waste from blood during kidney failure
How does Kidney dialysis work
Blood with waste passes into machine
Waste filtered into dialysis fluid through diffusion
dialysis fluid filtered out of machine and clean blood passes back into body
Organ donation
kidney from another person is put into patients body and attached to blood system
Problems of Kidney donation
Several hours of surgery, bad for weak patient
Kidney cells have antigens, so antigens must be modelled to the patient’s cells
