Controlling Blood glucose Flashcards
Diabetes
when body looses control of glucose concentration
How to test for diabetes
Urine tests
substances in urine can provide clues for doctors
How is glucose digested
glucose is released from carbohydrates.
Glucose is absorbed into the blood the small intestine and then into the cells where it is broken down for respiration
Why is a risk of higher glucose concentration possible
It takes time for cells to take in glucose, so it could build up in the blood
What effect does blood glucose rise have
As blood glucose rises, pancreas releases insulin
Insulin
causes cells in liver to take in glucose which decreases glucose in the blood
How does the liver store glucose
stores glucose as glycogen for energy
What happens when blood glucose falls too low
pancreatic cells releases glucagon
glucagon
causes liver cells to convert glycogen back into glucose
Homeostasis
Maintaining constant conditions inside the body
