Cellular Respiratoin Flashcards
Your body needs constant supply of energy for
moving
keeping warm
producing and breaking down substances
What is cellular respiration
a series of chemical reactions that release energy from glucose. Some of the energy is transferred out of the cell by heating to keep warm
Why type of reaction is respiration
exothermic
What is the main type of cellular respiration
aerobic respiration
Where in the cell do the reactions occur for aerobic respiration
mitochondria
Equation for aerobic respiration
glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water
How does the circulatory system make sure that the cells have a good supply of oxygen
oxygen taken in from lungs by the alveoli
glucose taken in through small intestines
ensures waste is carried away from cells
What happens to rates of aerobic respiration during exercise
rate increases
what happens to muscle cells during exercise
they take in more oxygen and glucose from the blood
what happens to the heart during exercise
the heart beats faster and deeper to increase oxygen diffusing in lungs
how does faster breathing help during exercise
excretes more CO2 and increases oxygen intake
Anaerobic respiration
oxygen is used faster than it is replaced
equation for anaerobic respiration
glucose -> lactic acid
Why do heart and breathing rates remain high after exercise
because extra oxygen is needed to replace oxygen lost from blood and muscles
