The Muscular System Flashcards
What is a muscle
group of fibers or muscle cellls that are bound together
Smooth Muscle
The stomach, bladder, and intestines are lined with SMOOTH MUSCLE
Involuntary
Not striated or striped
Each Cell has one Nucelus
Cardiac Muscle
Only in the heart
Involuntary
arranged in a network to allow heart to contract efficiently and rhythmically
striped with dark and light bands of cells
Cells have one Nucleus connected with gap junctions
Skeletal Muscle
attached to bones by tendons
cause movement when contracted
voluntary
striped
One nucleus
antagonistic pair
In an antagonistic muscle pair as one muscle contracts the other muscle relaxes or lengthens.
Tendons
Bands of connective tissue that connect muscle to bone
slow-twitch muscles
Contract slower
Adapted for endurance
Many mitochondria
contain Myoglobin for oxygen reservation (Darker in color)
Fas-twitch muscles
Contract faster
Adapted for strength
Fewer mitochondria
Less Myoglobin (lighter in color)
Myoglobin
A respiratory molecule that stores oxygen
