Drugs Flashcards
Types of Stimulants
Caffeine and Nicotine
Types of depressants
Alcohol and Inhalants
Illegal drugs
Amphetamine, cocaine and Marijuana
Effect of Nicotine
Increase the level of dopamine in synapses
Constrict blood vessels, making the heart work harder to pump blood
Effect of Caffeine
Blocks adenosine receptors in the brain that are responsible for the slowing down of neural activity and drowsiness
Temporarily raises adrenaline
Effect of alcohol
Affect the central nervous system causing relaxation and slugginess
Impair judgement, coordination and reaction time.
Effect of inhalants
Act as a depressant.
Cause nausea, vomitting and eventually death
Memory, hearing and vision impairment or loss.
Effect of alcohol
Affect the central nervous system causing relaxation and slugginess
Impair judgement, coordination, and reaction time.
How does Amphetamine and Cocaine work
By increasing the level of dopamine released in a synapse and do not allow their re absorption, causing longevity in the pleasurable feeling of dopamine enforces
How does Marijuana work
By the distribution of THC, a chemical, in the bloodstream, which will then bind to receptors in the brain and cause intense pleasure
What are the four functions of drugs
Imitate a neurotransmitter
Block receptors
Increase about of neurotransmitters released in a synapse
Prevent neurotransmitter from leaving the synapse
