Structure of the Nervous System Flashcards
Neurons
specialized cells that help you gather information about your environment, interpret and react to the information.
Dendrites
Receive signals called impulses from other neurons and conduct the impulse to the cell body. Each neuron contains several dendrites.
Cell Body
Where the nucleus and the cell organelles are found
Axon
Carries the nerve impulses from cell body to other neruons
Action potential
another name for a nerve impulse
threshold
the minimum stimulus to cause an action potential
Myelin
Myelin is an insulating layer, or sheath that forms around nerves, including those in the brain and spinal cord
nodes
gaps along the axon in between the myelin sheaths
What is the function of myelin
Sodium and potassium ions cant diffuse through the sheets, but they can reach the plasma membrane at the node, so they jump from node to node increasing the speed of the eimpulse
What is the difference between neurons with and without myelin
With Myelin; faster delivery of impulse: for sharp pain
Without Myelinl slower delivery of impulse: slow: throbbing pain.
neurotransmitter
Their job is to carry chemical signals from one neuron to The next target cell by binding to its receptors on the dendrite
how many neurotransmitters are there
