Ecological Behaviors Flashcards
What is the study of ecology
It is the study of the interactions between animals with each other or their environment. Interactions with other species members or not
What is the benefits of behaviors
Animals that engaging complex behaviors survive and reproduce because they inherited genes that helps them to be successful in a particular environment
What causes jeans to either increase or decrease in relative frequency
Jeans that provide adoptive advantages will increase in relative frequency what are those that don’t will decrease
Competitive behavior
Competition for food, space, mates and resources between members within a population.
Mail bighorn sheep spar until one gives up, the winner gets to meet with no interference
Agnostic behavior
Threatening or combative behaviors between two animals from the same species
Cats aspiring each other for the territory
Territorial behavior
To adopt an area and control it against the same species
Birds fighting picking and dropping for an area to nest
Dominance hierarchy’s
Animals living in one group develop hierarchy were the top ranked animal gets all resources with no conflict
Dominant hen packs of other hens to maintain their dominance
For aging behaviors
Finding an eating food when resources are limited
Migratory behaviors
Moving long distances season lead to new locations to increase chance of survival
Like geese traveling seasonally
Circadian rhythms
A cycle like sleeping or waking that occurs daily. Some cycles are seasonally O yearly and they are influenced by;
– environment
– daylight
– scarcity food
Squirrels sleep 24 hours when there is a normal life cycle but they sleep for 24 hours and 21 minutes in continual darkness
Courting behaviors
Behavior an animal engages in to attract a mate, there’s specific to species.
Mail frigatebirds display the Red Sox to attract females mates
Nurturing behavior
when parents provide care to their offsprings after birth like providing food protection and teaching them skills for survival
these animals have less offspring‘s due to the high rate of survival of the litter
Communicating with pheromones
spreading highly specific chemicals that are specific to species deliver information
“can’t be detected by other animals “
“ Used for reproduction or warning of attacks and predators”
Female silk moths use pheromones to attract mates
Auditory communication
Sounds that are specific to send messages
faster in efficient
Star can be detected by other animals*
A baby zebra cutting it’s packed after being followed by lion
cooperative behaviors
Altruistic behaviors/an action that benefits another member of the cost of the member itself
Bees protecting the queen when anyone touches her
