The lymphatic system Flashcards
what is the main function of the lymphatic system
to collect the fluid which escapes from the blood capillaries and too return in too the circulatory system
it is also apart of the bodies internal defense against disease causing organisms
what is the function of the lymph vessels
the lymph vessels go one way and they are even more permeable than capillaries the lymph is moved up to the heart by the smooth muscle and the skeletal muscle which surrounds it there function is to catch some of the fluid which comes out off the blood capillaries and to bring it back to the circulatory system
what is the function of lymph nodes
lymph nodes occur in in intervals along the lymph vessels there are numerous in the armpits and the groin they are surrounded by connective tissue the spaces bettween the nodes are crisscrossed networks of fibers and filters the lymph which comes through the lymph passes through several nodes before it enter the circulatory system.
how is bacteria trapped by the lymphatic system
larges pathogens and bacteria are trapped by the mesh work of fibers in the lymph nodes large phagocytic cells then destroy these particles by phagocytosis this may result in swelling of the lymph nodes.
