The Kidneys and Homeostasis Flashcards
1
Q
What three things do the kidneys do?
A
1) removal of urea from the blood
2) adjustment of ions in the blood
3) adjustment of water content of the blood
2
Q
How do the kidneys remove urea?
A
The kidneys filter it out of the blood stream, and then it is temporarily stored in the bladder as urine.
3
Q
What happens if the ion content is wrong?
A
Disrupts the balance between ions and water, meaning too much or too little water is drawn into cells by osmosis, which could damage the cells.
4
Q
How is water lost? (3 points)
A
1) in urine
2) in sweat
3) in the air we breathe out
5
Q
How is water content balanced? (3 points)
A
1) liquids consumed
2) amount sweated out
3) amount exerted by the kidneys in the urine
