Biology 3b Summary Questions Flashcards
What is happening to the worlds population and why?
It is increasing due to:
- better healthcare and medicine, less death from disease
- better farming methods, less death from starvation
What are three ways that the rising population is affecting the environment?
1) sewage, toxic chemicals and fertilisers pollute water systems
2) nuclear waste is underground, household waste is in landfill
3) smoke and gases released into the atmosphere pollute the air
What are the four main activities that take up land?
1) farming
2) buildings
3) dumping waste
4) quarrying for metal ores
What are five stores of carbon?
1) peat bogs
2) oceans
3) lakes
4) ponds
5) green plants
Why is it important to have stores of carbon?
They mean CO2 is removed from the atmosphere.
What are two important greenhouse gases?
Methane and Carbon Dioxide.
What are three reasons why large areas of forest are cut down?
1) timber for building materials
2) clear land for farming
3) paper from wood
Apart from a reduction in biodiversity, what three other problems can deforestation lead to?
1) CO2 is released
2) more methane in the atmosphere
3) less CO2 taken in
Does fermentation involve aerobic or anaerobic respiration?
Fermentation involves the anaerobic respiration of yeast.
What are the main two components of biogas?
Methane and carbon dioxide.
A farmer has a field, he plans to grow corn in it and then feed the corn to his cows, which he raises for meat. How could the farmer use the field more efficiently to produce food for humans?
Intensively farm the cows, and also reduce the number of stages in the food chain.
Why do chickens kept in tiny cages in heated sheds need less food?
They have less room to move, so need less energy and also the heater means that they give out less energy as heat.
What microorganism is the main source of mycoprotein?
Fungi.
What is ‘sustainable food production’?
Having enough food without using resources faster than they renew.
What are two ways that fish stock can be conserved?
1) fishing quotas
2) net size
