Gas and Solute Exchange Flashcards
How do substances move?
By diffusion, osmosis and active transport.
What is diffusion?
Where particles move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
What is osmosis?
Where water moves from an area of dilute fluid to an area of concentrated fluid.
What is active transport?
Where water moves from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration.
What do gases and dissolved substances have to travel through?
Exchange surfaces.
What are the characteristics of exchange surfaces and why? (4 points)
1) thin so substances have a short distance to diffuse
2) large surface area for lots of diffusion at once
3) lots of blood vessels to get stuff in and out of the blood quickly
4) ventilate so air moves in and out
