Circulatory System - The Heart Flashcards
What does the heart do?
It contracts to pump blood round the body.
What are the four chambers called in the heart?
Right and left ventricle, right and left atrium.
How does the heart use it’s four chambers to pump blood round the body? (4 points)
1) blood flows into the two atria from the vena cava and the pulmonary vein
2) the atria contract, pushing the blood into the ventricles
3) the ventricles contract, forcing blood into the pulmonary artery and the aorta, and out of the heart
4) the blood flows to the organs through arteries and returns through veins
What type of blood do the pulmonary artery and vena cava carry and where does it go?
De-oxygenated blood which goes to the lungs.
What type of blood do the aorta and pulmonary vein carry and where does it go?
Oxygenated blood which goes to the rest of the body.
