Osmosis Flashcards
What is osmosis?
The movement of water particles across a partial-permeable membrane from a region of high water concentration (dilute) to a region of low water concentration (concentrated).
What is the only substance that can move in osmosis and why?
Water, because they can fit through the small holes in the membrane.
What is osmosis a type of?
Diffusion.
How does water move in an out of a cell by osmosis? (4 points)
1) tissue fluid surrounds the cells in the body
2) the tissue fluid will have a different concentration to the fluid inside the cell, so water will either move into the cell or out of it
3) if the cell is short of water, then the solution inside will become concentrated, which usually means the outside fluid is more dilute, so water will move into the cell
4) if the cell solution is more dilute, so water will be drawn out of the cell by osmosis
