The impact of physical activity on health Flashcards
What are the 4 conditions?
- Coronary heart disease
- High blood pressure
- Cholesterol levels
- Stroke
What is CHD caused by?
Atherosclerosis
What is atherosclerosis caused by?
Build up of atheroma in coronary arteries
What impact does atheroma have on the cardiac system?
Block/narrowing in arteries = high blood pressure = atheroma breaks off = bleeds and causes blood clot (platelets) = heart attack (no O2)
What is the pain called when blood flow is reduced to the heart?
Angina
How does exercise reduce the risk of CHD?
2 and a half hours of moderate exercise per week reduces the risk.
What is high blood pressure?
The force exerted by the blood on the blood vessel walls.
What can high blood pressure lead to?
Heart attacks, strokes
How does exercise reduce blood pressure?
Regular exercise reduces both systolic and diastolic pressure by 10mmHg - from 120/80 to 110/70.
What are the two types of cholesterol?
LDL’s and HDL’s
What are LDL’s
Low density lipo proteins (BAD)
What are HDL’s?
High density lipo proteins (GOOD)
What impact do LDL’s have on the body?
They transport cholesterol to the tissues, and cause heart attacks due to atheroma.
What impact do HDL’s have on the body?
They transport cholesterol to the liver, where it is broken down, and urinated.
How does regular exercise affect cholesterol levels?
It increases HDL’s and decreases LDL’s
