The Aerobic System (glycogen) Flashcards
1
Q
What is the aerobic system?
A
Used for moderate, long duration exercise
2
Q
How much energy does the aerobic system produce
A
18 times more than the anaerobic systems
3
Q
What is a phrase used to describe the aerobic system?
A
O2 supply = O2 demand
4
Q
What 3 fuel sources supply the aerobic system?
A
Glycogen, fats, and proteins
5
Q
What is Stage 1
A
Glycolysis
6
Q
Describe the process of stage 1 (Glycogen stores)
A
Glycogen is broken down by phosphofructokinase, into glucose-6-phosphate.
Pyruvate acid is produced
7
Q
What is Stage 2 of the (glycogen) aerobic system
A
The krebs cycle
8
Q
Describe the Krebs cycle
A
- Pyruvate combines with coenzyme A to produce acetyl coenzyme A
- Acetyl coenzyme A combines with oxalaecitic acid to form citric acid
- Citric acid is oxidised which then gives 2 moles ATP, hydrogen atom, and CO2
9
Q
What is stage 3 of the (glycogen) aerobic system?
A
The electron transport chain
10
Q
Describe the ETC
A
- Hydrogen atoms from Krebs cycle are split into ions and electrons
- Hydrogen ions react with oxygen to form water
- Hydrogen electrons give energy for ATP re-synthesis - 34 moles ATP!!
