Gaseous exchange Flashcards

1
Q

What does gaseous exchange involve?

A

Getting oxygen from the lungs and into the blood, then to the working muscles.
Removing carbon dioxide from the muscles into the blood, and getting it to the lungs where it is expired.

Q

Give the 13 point process

A
  1. Breathe in
  2. Pp of O2 in alveoli is higher than in the blood
  3. O2 diffuses into blood (high -> low)
  4. Rate that diffusion occurs depends on diffusion gradient
  5. Diffusion continues until pressure in both is equal
  6. Blood becomes oxygenated (oxyhaemoglobin)
  7. Blood moves to the muscles
  8. Same process for movement of O2 into muscles
  9. Oxygen used for muscular contraction
  10. CO2 produced as waste product
  11. Pp of CO2 increases in muscles
  12. Above process is reversed - CO2 diffuses into blood (carbaminohaemoglobin)
  13. CO2 then transported to lungs to be expired.
