Lung Volumes Flashcards
What are the 5 lung volumes?
- Tidal volume
- Minute ventilation
- Inspiratory reserve volume
- Expiratory reserve volume
- Residual volume
Define tidal volume
The volume of air breathed in OR out per breath.
What is tidal volume at rest?
0.5 litres
Define minute ventilation
The volume of air breathed in OR out per minute.
How do you calculate minute ventilation?
Number of breaths (per min) x tidal volume
Define inspiratory reserve volume
The volume of air that can be forcibly breathed in after a normal breath.
Define expiratory reserve volume
The volume of air that can be forcibly breathed out after a normal breath.
Define residual volume
The volume of air that remains in the lungs after MAXIMAL expiration
What happens to tidal volume during exercise
It increases
What happens to minute ventilation during exercise?
It increases
What happens to inspiratory and expiratory reserve volumes during exercise?
They decrease, due to tidal volume increasing.
What happens to residual volume during exercise?
Stays the same
What is label A on the spirometer trace?
Inspiratory reserve volume
What is label B on the spirometer trace?
Expiratory reserve volume
What is label C on the spirometer trace?
Tidal volume
