What is Hospitality?
Hospitality refers to the warm and friendly way in which a host (i.e. person who receives or entertains another as a guest) receives his guests;
or
Hospitality refers to the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests or strangers.
What must the host ensure?
The host must ensure that the guests’ needs and requests are met. The host needs to be as helpful as possible and must also show care for his guests.
What are some examples of hospitable acts?
If our friends were to visit our home during festive occasions (i.e. Hari Raya, Lunar New Year, Christmas, etc) or on social visits, we:
- do our best to make them feel at home.
- ensure that they are served food and drinks.
- provide them with accommodation (i.e. a place for guests to stay, live or work in) / lodging (i.e. a place to stay at) / comfortable beds to sleep on if they stay overnight.
What does the hospitality industry offer?
The hospitality industry offers a wide range of facilities (e.g. hotels, resorts, restaurants and spas) that make people (i.e. the customers / guests) comfortable when they are away from their home.
Note: Spas are facilities that provide fitness or health-related services to customers / guests.
What does the hospitality industry consist of?
Two main categories:
- Accommodation and lodging facilities, e.g. hotels, motels (i.e. roadside hotel for motorists), guest houses, inns, hostels (dormitories), bed-and-breakfast (B&B), serviced apartments and resorts
- Food and beverage (F&B) services, e.g. restaurants, coffee houses, food outlets and bars.
