What were hotels called / known as in the past?
Inns… places where travellers on horseback could have a meal, a bath and rest for the night. Inns also provided accommodation for the travellers’ horses.
How are modern hotels grouped into? / How are hotels grouped into today?
- Luxury hotels (7-, 6- or 5-star);
- Deluxe hotels (5- or 4-star);
- Boutique hotels; and
- Budget hotels
How are hotels rated?
By ‘stars’ based on their standards. The higher the number of stars, the higher the standard of service (i.e. more services, facilities and amenities) provided by the hotel staff. Also, the higher the rating is, the more expensive the room for the night.
Different countries have different standards for star ratings.
5-star hotels – Luxury hotels (very expensive, offer the highest level of customer service… e.g. Four Seasons Hotels and Ritz-Carlton Hotels), Deluxe hotels (i.e. hotels which offer a wide range of services but the room rates are lower than those of luxury hotels. Such hotels are either five-star or four-star rated… e.g. Orchard Hotel, M Hotel)
4-star hotels – Deluxe hotels, Boutique hotels
3-star hotels – Boutique hotels
2-star hotels – Budget hotels
1-star hotels – Budget hotels
Who provides the general guidelines on the ratings of local hotels?
The Singapore Hotel Association (SHA) and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB).
What do Five-Star Hotels offer?
- The highest standard of luxury, comfort and services
- Original architectural style and design
- Interior décor constructed from the highest-grade materials
- Plenty of fresh flowers and plants in the surroundings
- Large land space
- 24-hour room service
- Excellent fine dining restaurants (i.e. dine with silverware, wine glasses, nice ambience)
- Great attention to guests’ needs, e.g. baggage assistance / porter services by bellhops, housekeeping, valet parking / services, concierge services (note: concierge refers to staff in a hotel that takes care of the specific needs and requests of the guests)
- Business centre that offers office equipment (computers, fax machines, photocopiers, etc) and services (e.g. printing) found in offices
- Meeting rooms to cater to the needs of business travellers
- Ballrooms for special events (e.g. weddings, anniversaries, birthdays) and company functions (year-end dinners)
- Recreational facilities such as spa services, first-class fitness centres, large swimming pools
- Spacious guestrooms with fine furnishings
- Amenities such as luxury toiletries, high speed internet access, mini-bars, televisions, CD and / or DVD players (note: amenities refer to things provided in hotel rooms for the convenience of guests to make their stay comfortable.)
