The Heart Flashcards
Route of the blood
Vena cava - Right atrium - Tricuspid valve - Right ventricle - Pulmonary valve - Pulmonary artery - Pulmonary vein - Left atrium - Bicuspid valve - Left ventricle - Aortic valve - Aorta
Vena cava
Carries deoxygenated blood from the lower half of the body to the right atrium
Right atrium
Receives deoxygenated blood from the vena cava and pumps it into the right ventricle
Tricuspid valve
Prevents back flow of blood from the right ventricle into the right atrium
Right ventricle
Pumps blood through the pulmonary valve and through the pulmonary artery to the lumgs
Pulmonary valve
Allows blood to leave the heart via the arteries
Pulmonary artery
Responsible for transporting oxygen-depleted blood away from the heart back towards the lungs
Pulmonary vein
Responsible for carrying oxygenated blood from the lungs back to the left atrium
Left atrium
A holding chamber for blood returning from the lungs and to act as a pump to transport blood to other areas of the heart
Bicuspid valve
It allows blood to flow one way only, from the left atrium into the left ventricle
Left ventricle
Responsible for pumping oxygenated blood to tissues all over the body
Aortic valve
Allows oxygenated blood to flow into the aorya
Aorta
The main artery that carries blood away from your heart to the rest of your body
