The Heart Flashcards
Aorta
Carries oxygen rich blood from the left ventricle to the body.
Super vena cava
Brings oxygen poor blood from the upper body to the right atrium
Right pulmonary veins
Brings oxygen rich blood from the right lung to the left atrium.
Right atrium
Accepts oxygen poor blood from the body.
Right ventricle
Pumps oxygen poor blood from the body.
Tricuspid valve
Prevents the back flow of blood as it is pumped from the right atrium to the right ventricle.
Inferior vena cava
Brings oxygen poor blood from the lower body to the right atrium
Pulmonary arteries
Carries oxygen poor blood to the lungs
Left atrium
Accepts oxygen rich blood from the lungs
Left pulmonary veins
Brings oxygen rich blood from the left lung to the left atrium.
Pulmonary valve
Prevents the back flow of blood as it is pumped from the right ventricle to the pulmonary arteries.
Mitral valve
Prevents the back flow of blood as it is pumped from the left atrium to the left ventricle.
Aortic valve
Prevents the back flow of blood as it is pumped from the left ventricle to the aorta.
Left ventricle
Pumps oxygen rich blood to the body
Septum
Prevents oxygen rich blood and oxygen poor blood from mixing.
Describe the size and composition of the heart.
- Size of a clenched fist.
- hollow organ
- made of four chambers
- made up of epithelial and connective tissue
What is a pace maker?
Bundle of nerves that contract the heart. This causes the heart to pump.
What is the coronary artery?
Very narrow artery that supplies oxygen and nutrients to the heart itself.
heart needs blood too
What does SA stand for?
Sinoatrial node
What does AV stand for?
Atrioventrical node
