Nephron Quiz Flashcards
Describe what a nephron is….🤔
1 of approximately a million functional units in a kidney. Nephrons regulate the concentration of water and soluble substances by filtering the blood, reabsorbing what’s needed, and excreting the rest.
What part of the kidney are nephrons located?
Cortex
What are the three stages of making urine?
Filtration
Reabsorption
Urine creation (secretion as formerly known)
Describe filtration
Process where water and dissolvable particles are pulled out of the blood. What’s left is called filtrate which contains water and toxic substances. The filtrate makes its way out of the Bowman’s capsule for transport.
Where does filtration occur?
Bowman’s capsule
Describe reabsorption…🤷♀️
Process where water and dissolvable substances are brought back to the blood.
Occurs in the tubules and loop of henle
Describe tubular reabsorption……
Cells in proximal tubule remove water and nutrients from filtrate and bring it back to the blood.
What occurs in the loop of henle?🔄
Concentration of filtrate by removing more water.
Describe urine creation?
When the filtrate drains into the collecting duct after being concentrated in the loop of henle. From here it goes to the ureters and then to the urinary bladder to be excreted.
Occurs at end of tubule and collecting duct
What are Some of the dissolvable substances filtered by the nephrons?
Glucose, amino acids, urea, Na+, Cl-, K+.
What toxic substance is made from the break up of amino acids, and makes up urea?
Ammonia
Is filtration, reabsorption, and urine creation selective, or not selective?
Filtration - not selective
Reabsorption- selective
Urine creation-selective
