the heart Flashcards
aorta
the artery that takes blood away from the heart and towards the body, blood is pumped in by the contraction of the left ventricle
vena cava
the vein that returns deoxygenated blood to the right hand side of the heart, pumps blood into right atrium
pulmonary artery
takes deoxygenated blood to the lungs, blood is pumped in by contraction of the right ventricle
right coronary artery
supplies blood to the right atrium and a portion of both ventricles, supplies the cells of atrioventricular and sinoatrial nodes
left coronary artery
supplies oxygenated blood to the anterior portion of the septum, anterior walls of the left atrium and both ventricles
pulmonary vein
takes oxygenated blood from the lungs back to the heart, into the right ventricle
artery
- type of blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart to the tissues
- carries under high pressure
- walls are comprised of arteries contain collagen, smooth muscle and elastic fibers
arterioles
- type of blood vessel that connects arteries to the capillaries
- walls are comprised of collagen smooth muscle and elastic fibers
capillaries
- microscopic blood vessels that form a large network through the tissue of the body
- connect the arterioles to the venules
- site of exchange of substances between the blood and the tissue
vein
- a type of blood vessel that carries blood towards the heart under low pressure
- wide lumen, smooth inner lining and valves
- the walls of the veins contain large amounts of collagen, smooth muscle, and little elastic fibers
venule
- a type of blood vessel that connects capillaries and veins
- the walls of the venules contain small amounts of smooth muscle and collagen
septum
the wall of muscle which separates the left hand side of the heart and the right hand side of the heart, preventing deoxygenated and oxygenated blood from mixing
single circulatory system
where the blood follows one circuit. blood is pumped by the heart around the body and then returns to the heart, found in fish
cardiac cycle
describes the sequence of events resulting in one complete contraction and relaxation of the heart
cardiac output
the volume of blood pumped around the circulatory system in one minute
