The Halogens THE PERIODIC TABLE Flashcards
What are the halogens properties?
They are toxic non-metals.
They have coloured vapours.
Low melting and boiling points.
Poor conductors of heat and electricity.
What type of molecule are they?
Diatomic. The atoms in each pair are joined to each other by a covalent bond.
What is the pattern of their melting and boiling points?
They increase as you go down the group.
How many electrons do they have in their outermost energy level?
7
What needs to happen to their electrons to gain a stable electronic structure?
They need to gain an electron.
What happens to their reactivity?
They get less reactive as you go down the group.
What happens with displacement reaction with The Halogens?
A more reactive halogen will displace a less reactive halogen from solutions of its salts.
