RATES AND EQUILLIBRIUM Flashcards
What is the rate of a chemical reaction?
How fast the reactants turn into products.
What are the two ways that you can work out the rate of a chemical reaction?
Find out how quickly the reactants are used up as they make products
How quickly the products of the reaction are made.
What experiment can you use to measure the decreasing mass of a reaction mixture?
You can measure the rate at which the mass of a reaction changes if the reaction gives off a gas. As the reaction takes place, the mass of the reaction decreases. You can measure and record the mass at regular time intervals.
For example, you could use marble chips and hydrochloric acid.
What experiment can be done to measure the increasing volume of gas given off?
If a reaction produces gas, you can use the gas to find out the rate of the reaction. You can do this by collecting the gas and measuring the volume given off at time intervals.
What experiment can be done to measure the decreasing light passing through a solution?
Some reactions in solution make a suspension of an insoluble solid (precipitate). This makes the solution go cloudy. You can use this to measure the rate at which the precipitate appears.
Eg a conical flask placed over a cross, continue until you can no longer see the cross.
