Electromagnetic Waves Flashcards
What are electromagnetic waves?
Electric and magnetic disturbances that can be used to transfer energy from a source to an absorber.
They do not transfer matter, the energy they transfer depends on the wavelength of the waves. The energy they transfer depends on the wavelength of the waves. This is why waves of different wavelengths have different effects.
List the electromagnetic spectrum from longer to shorter wavelength.
Radio waves Microwaves Infrared Visible light Ultraviolet radiation X-rays and gamma radiation.
What speed do all electromagnetic waves travel at (in a vacuum)?
Speed of 3.0 x 10*8 m/s
300 million m/s
What is the equation for wave speed?
Wave speed (m/s) = frequency (Hz) x wavelength (m).
What does the wave speed equation show you?
As all waves travel at a speed of 300 million m/s
The shorter the wavelength of the waves, the higher there frequency.
The energy of the waves increase as the frequency increases.
