Structure of the Atom ATOMS, BONDING AND MOLES Flashcards
What are the three sub-atomic particles called?
Protons, neutrons and electrons
Where are the protons and neutrons found?
In the nucleus which is at the centre of the atom.
How are electrons arranged?
In shells around the nucleus.
How many electrons does each shell contain?
2,8,8,10
What charge and relative mass does a proton have?
Charge: +1
Relative mass: 1
What charge and relative mass does a neutron have?
Charge:0
Relative mass:1
What charge and relative mass does an electron have?
Charge:-1
Relative mass:1/2000
What does the group of the periodic table tell you?
How many electrons are in the outside shell.
What does the way an element reacts depend on?
The number of electrons in its highest energy level (outermost shell)
How many electrons does group 8 have?
It has 8 electrons in its outermost shell. This means that it has a full shell, therefore, they are stable and don’t react.
What do certain elements react in a similar way?
If they are in a particular group they have the same number of electrons in their highest energy level.
What does the atomic number tell you?
The number of protons in each atom of an element.
How are the events in the periodic table arranged?
In order of their atomic number.
What does the mass number tell you?
The number of protons plus neutrons in the nucleus of an atom.
How do you work out the number of neutrons in an atom?
Number of neutrons = mass number - atomic number.
