Q

What type of liquids are used in fractional distillation?

A

Miscible - these are liquids that mix completely (unlike immiscible liquids that show separated layers in the mixture).

Q

Why is it difficult to get pure liquids from mixtures of liquids?

A

Vapour is given off before they actually reach their boiling point.

Q

What does the fractionating column do?

A

It is a tall glass filled with beads, on top of the flask (the one that you heat). The vapour has to pass through this. It is warmer at the bottom, getting cooler as you near the top. This allows the substances Whitt higher boiling points to condense on the cool beads and drip back down. However, the substances with low boiling points can condense and move into the condenser.

Q

How far up the chromatography paper the solution travels means what about is solubility?

A

The more soluble the substance in the solvent is, the further up the paper it is carried.
